difficult for Chinese to subsist. For money, the par-
ents had no choice to sell the oldest child to

That's the grisly history before 1949.Now Chinese
will never be back in the terror like that, and I
am proud of China being strong enough to defend
herself. In spite that there are maybe a long way to
go,I'm true that China will be as rich as heaven in
the futrue. Because there are 12 millions Chinese,
most of them are kind and peaceable ---- no arguing,no
fighting, no gambling, no drinking, nobuying pro-
stitutes, no smuggling, no killing,no abusing their
wives, no trafficing drugs.

この前、テレビで原爆の膨大なデータを計算するために、最初のコンピュータが開発されたとのことを紹介される番組があって、だったら「軍拡」も100％悪いものではないなと考えました。そう言えば飛行機だって、戦争に使うから性能が一気にアップしたのですね。

中国の今回の打ち上げ成功で、「中国脅威論」を主張する米国の軍事産業業界にとって、新たなテーマが生れたわけですね。これで更なる画期的な技術進歩も期待できそう。

中国の宇宙船打ち上げはあくまでも宇宙開発及びビジネスを目標とするもので（でなければ前ソ連のように長くはもたないが）、こんな悪役に買って出ることはないと思いますが、ついでに米国軍事産業の技術アップの「促進剤」となれば一石二鳥かもしれませんね。

武漢レストランの出来事、やっと落ち着いたのでしょうか。
随分つまらない「事件」でしたね。
関係者の適切な対応が望ましく、マスコミが熱くなっても意味がないでしょうが。

ところで、中国が無人宇宙船の打ち上げ、回収を成功したことで、「脅威論」が再燃するでしょうか。日米が戦略防御システムを本格的に取り組もうという矢先に、中国がこういうのができたらまったく意味がなくなるのではないか。どうしょう。

I notice that the Chinese boat people phenomenon is indeed a big issue. Also, the fact that a portion (not all) of Chinese people oppress one another abroad is something to lament about and be angry about. However, merely saying "that's sad" is notgoing to solve anything. The most important thing is to dig deeply into the roots of the problem and try to come up with solutions to solve them! First of all, please allow me to utter some of my unworthy opinions:

1) The education level of illegalimmigrants and "pimps" is low. They are vulnerable to groundless propaganda saying that "there is gold in foreign land and once you get there you can get rich immediately." In their minds, there is the only question of "how to live a better live," and notwhether "sailing a boat across the ocean" would break the law or something.

2) Also, a Chinese saying goes "if you can be hair, who would want to be a flea?" It is not that the boat people love adventure and love to rock in a small boat with a fewhundred people on it, it is that they feel they have no choice but to go abroad to search for a better life. We can all refer to international law, and condemn these people, however, have we ever thought from their point of view in a humane way? ---- -
You live in poor villages back in China; you have 2 old parents to feed, children and wife to raise. You have no money to pay for school fees for your dear daughter. Your daughter is only 6 years old. You realize that if you cannot earn money to pay forher school fees, she will have no choice but to become a prostitute or a servant when she grows up (because she will have no education). The officials there are corrupt and there are no employment opportunities in the village......one day, someone comesand tells you that you can earn $10000 in a year....and you must go abroad in a boat.......

What would you think in that instant? You don't have to tell me the answer, just think about it.

However, please don't misunderstand. I'm notdefending the activities of boat people and the illegal immigrants. Each nation's authorities have every right to arrest them and send them back. However, I'm just asking you to take a minute and try to think from a more humane way, and not just from a legalway.

I don't deny the fact that there are still a portion of Chinese people who are anxious to show off to cover their insecurity in today's society. However, there are those who are truly proud of their achievements. I am one of them. Nobody should feelbad about himself or herself. But throwing aggressive remarks and potential insults at people from the other country is definitely not tolerable. If any fellow Chinese happens to hear what I'm saying, I urge you to stop. Aggressiveness is not the mostfearful weapon, but "gentleness" is. Have you ever found it a lot more difficult to turn down a polite, gentle lady than a rude, inconsiderate man? This explains it all.

Congratulations to our country, China, for the successful space shuttle launch.Have you ever seen those space technology scientists coming here to throw attacks at the Japanese? Do you think that the scientists take great pride in putting down other countries by mere words? Of course not. That is because they know they know theyare intelligent, and such confidence is reflected in their silence and gentleness. Instead of expressing their pride through their mouths, they prefer to do it through their hands and brains. This is something we should all learn to do.

I haven't seen a decent message at this forum for a long time. I agree with most of what you said. It is true that China was a poor country in the past and still is to a certain extent. I don't deny thatthere are still those who have barely enough to eat and wear. The most urgent thing now is for China to develop its economy quickly and open up its society so its citizens can have more air to breath (physically and psychologically).

However, allthings in this universe have reasons for their existence. The reason why China was poor back then is the reluctance of the government elite to reform. While all other countries were industrializing and modernizing their society, China still retained itsimperial and semi-feudal political system. It was not until when foreign powers forced numerous unequal treaties on us did we then wake up and smell the coffee.
Although China is still in many respects not quite modernized, I dare not deny the fact thatwe have made giant improvements over the last half century or just the past few decades. It is a fact that the living standard in China has risen dramatically since Deng's Open Door Policy in 1978. But of course, the road to equality and prosperity isstill long and harsh. I think that it will take at least 15 years before we can call ourselves wealthy.

We may have been criticizing how the government is doing and how the people are rude and things like that. However, have we really thoughtabout the immense difficulty of carrying out any kind of social, economic, and political re-engineering in such a huge country like China? Not only the territory is big, not only the diversity among different regions of China is big, not even thediversity of ethnic groups in different areas is large, but the mere phenomenon of having 1.2 billion people is enough to drive someone with even a 200 IQ crazy. Sometimes, we cannot compare countries which possess vastly different conditions to start with.Of course you would see the "differences" between China and the US in many respects, but one country has only been really modernizing for 20 years and the other one has been doing so for over 150 years. I'm not defending the Chinese reluctance andjustification for resisting or opposing reforms. I would like to see China strong and prosperous, but sometimes we cannot rush and must examine each issue to the finest detail before we can draw any conclusion. For example, the issue of "developing China's West"itself is enough to generate a few hundred Ph.D. papers. I'm not merely talking about political reform, but the research that has to be done about ethnicity, economic conditions, geographic conditions, logistics, strategic importance, and the model ofeconomic development is so immense that even hiring all Sinologists in this world would not be enough to close the file.

Whenever I walk around downtown Yokohama,I would recall the days when Mrs.Cameron began rescuing Chinese girls from their white slaveries in San Fransico. It was during 1880s.There estimated more than20000 prostitutes from China. Most of them were sold by their parents or by "Tongs"(Chinese gangs from Southern China). Their prices were on average $50-100 and consequently they were resold to Chinese panderors for $1500 or more.
China was a miserablecountry one hundred years ago and still is. Because newly relocated Chinese males are doing exactly the same as I write here in the Unites States and Japan now: arguing, fighting, gambling, drinking, buying prostitutes, smuggling, killing, abusing theirwives, and trafficing drugs. It is really sad.
Most Chinese prostitutes then were "converted" by American missionaries and got married to the small businessmen in Chinatown in San Fransico. Imagine how sad it was! Other oriental girls includingJapanese and Vietnamese were also kidnapped and sold as prostitutes, but the Chinese gangs were the most merciless and violent.They even burnt the missionaries' houses and killed immigration officers. I think China still remains unchanged because the voiceshere are just showing-offs of the Chinese residing in Japan(or abroad), only bursting out with their grievances to hide their inferiority and expressing no perspectives:it is sad. China was miserable and poor as hell and still is. And I guess it will beif those guys remain as they are now.

我始終不承認人貧志短的説法！但是，我思考了許多年，還是想不通：到底是外国人不尊重中国人還是中国人蔑視中国人的尊厳？為何往往中国人在海外可以感覚出的人的尊厳，相反在自己的祖国却難得感覚得到。誰能告訴我是如何一回事？教養不足的日本人（或外国人）看不起中国人的事件数量与中国人虐待中国人的事情相比，不知要少多少！既使在北京、上海等相対文明程度較高的大都市中国人迫害中国人，傷中国人自尊的事情時有発生。一個不尊重自己的民族不能要求別人的尊重。既使非常富有的中国人一様在中国的土地上会面対同族的傷害。中国人短的不是金銭，短的是尊厳意識（尊重自己、尊重他人），或者説対尊厳、人権等精神層次的需要方面，還遠遠没有起馬的認識。看一看衣冠不整的外地打工者有勇気背井離郷到大都市却没有勇気対城裏人明明白白的“差別”（対不起，我還是忍不住用了日本人的語彙）報以該有的維持自尊的反抗（或許根本没有意識到作為人的尊厳），就会認識到中国人不被世人尊重，根子在中国人自身。我為中国人的“忍耐”感到十分難過。

昨天本報報道的“日本食客武昌撒野事件”有了結果：17日，強迫武昌新
宜大酒
店中餐廳女經理下跪的日方当事人，委托常年法律顧問將一 道歉書送達武昌市公安局出

理處，并將一 《諒解備忘録》送達酒店。同時，其法律顧問還当面向女經理表示了歉意

　　 《諒解備忘録》里寫道：“對1999年11月15日晩在新宜大酒店消費服務過程中，由于

据武昌市公安局出入境管理處負責人介紹，日方当事人在17日下午送到該處的道歉書里承

是讓旁人難以完全相信，那几个日本人可能会有這種[誤解]，但当時
陪他們吃飯的三位武漢市里的領導和那位没有[語言差別]的翻譯怎麼
也有此[誤解]，爲什麼他們不能在事發的十五分鐘里給解釋一下這个
誤会，跟日本人講這里是五星極酒店，不是陪酒的酒 。但最不能
讓人接受的是那位事發中 来的酒店經理和多位保安，据楚天新聞
報道中所説，這几人不僅没有幇着他們的同事去和日本人解釋一下
李某不是陪酒女郎，反而去阻止周圍有血性的中国人上前救助受害
者，實在是令人費解之極。現在那个酒店負責人又擺出一副高姿態
接受了日本人同樣高姿態的道歉，好象這一切都是安排好的似的，
而他們在事件中所扮演的幇凶角色是不是就此變成了道義上的勝利
者了？這恐怕還要我們這些中国人再好好想一想。

這樣的結果讓人 起来實在覺得有些牽強。首先這里看不出日本人
有任何歉意，其誠意更是値得懷疑。什麼叫做“由于不同国家的語
言、礼節及風俗的差異而發生的誤会，深表遺憾……”，日本和欧
美的文化差別大不大，爲什麼没听説日本人敢在美国的酒店里如此
放肆。 外，受害人不知道是不是讓“領導們”做了許多“工
作”，跟着那个酒店的負責人認可了日本人的誠意，以中国傳統女
性的“寛容”讓這件事大事化小而最終化无，从而讓這几名本来應
是做爲“中日友好使者”的日本人滿意而歸。設想一下，如果這件
事發生在美国人身上，那麼結果又会是如何那？几年前在美国發生
過日本公司性騷擾美国女員工的事情，那几名美国婦女不僅讓他們
的日本人上司 了官，公司還向 們道歉并賠償了上千万美金。从
此這類事情便很少在听説過了。那更不用説發生如此肢体侵害，人
格侮辱，精神損失等加在一起 那几个日本人和横濱市喝一壺的
了。可是我們中国却有着“打落牙齒還要装出笑臉”的寛容，難道
這就是“礼儀之邦”的所謂礼儀？

武漢楚天報今天的追踪報道説那几名日本人委托第三
方向受害人李某道歉，説是一次“因文化和風俗的不同而引起的誤
会”，而就此了結。

強迫新宜大酒店中餐廳女經理李某下跪的日方当事人木津二次郎讓
其律師并將一 《誤解備忘録》送達酒店。同時其法律顧問還当面
向女經理李某解釋当晩造成的誤会，当時木津是希望李某能過来陪
酒，因在日本陪酒女郎都是在客人面前下跪陪酒的，因文化及語言
的不通，目津当時因李某没有下跪的意思而感到不滿，最后才導致
下跪事件的發生。最后該律師代表木津向李某表示了歉意。該備忘
録中称他對１９９９年１１月１５日晩在新宜大酒店消費服務過程
中，由于不同国家的語言、礼節及風俗的差異而發生的誤会，深表
遺憾……新宜大酒店負責人昨日接受采訪時称，他們對日方当事人
道歉的誠意表示認可，畢竟這是一次因文化和風俗的不同而引起的
誤会。被強迫下跪的餐廳女經理李某也對記者説：“我對他們的道

1月18日，武漢警方及酒店当事人在談及“強迫下跪”事件的原因時称，一是日語翻譯

ユーゴの中国大使館がアメリカに爆撃されたあと、朱さんを心配した
