Resistance activity is now, therefore, entirely in the hands of local
Resistance fighters of the Samarra’ area, some belonging to the Ansar
as-Sunnah Resistance organization, others in the Islamic Army, or the
Jaysh al-Mujahideen, or other groups, as well as some local al-Qa‘idah
fighters. Strong resistance is also being mounted by members of the
local Bedouin tribes.

The Samarra’correspondent for Mafkarat al-Islam reported Shaykh Abu
Yasir al-Mashhadani a member of the Consultative Council of the
Mujahideen ? an organization belonging to al-Qa‘idah, as saying that
the withdrawal was a planned movement.
“We didn’t want these cities to be destroyed as happened to other
cities previously,” Shaykh al-Mashhadani said.

The correspondent reported that the withdrawal of the bulk of
al-Qa‘idah forces was locally regarded as a positive change in
al-Qa‘idah tactics in Iraq. In past situations they had fortified
themselves in cities and fought fierce battles against US forces,
but that, the correspondent observed, only benefited that occupation and
its stooges who were able to bottle a large number of Resistance
fighters up in one place, tighten the ring around them and then kill
them with massive bombs and chemical weapons as happened in al-Fallujah
and Tall ‘Afar. In those instances the Americans also destroyed the
cities over the heads of the residents and then, together with their
Iraqi puppet forces, went in on wholesale killing, rape, and plunder
operations.

The Mafkarat al-Islam correspondent closed his report by saying that it
was expected locally that tomorrow,Saturday, would be a significant day.
There are still regions were the US occupation troops have not entered,
he wrote, and the Resistance had possibly planned large and destructive
attacks for them whenever they advance into those areas.

al-Islam reported that a short time earlier extremely violent explosions
began resounding in the eastern part of Samarra’, some 120km north of
Baghad.
