American Automobile Association (AAA) 会報今月号の記事です。ハワイ併合のいきさつが簡単に書かれています。これによればクリントンが謝罪はしたけども賠償はしていないみたい。ハワイ併合は民間人がハワイ政府を乗っ取ちゃったみたいです。こんなのが直前にあったら韓国併合なんて合法そのもの。誰もいちゃもんをつけられませんや。まさに日本の悪い所は大東亜戦争に敗けたこと。

The Last Queen

Born Sept. 2, 1838, Liliuokalani was an accomplished musician and serious student who enjoyed horseback riding and song writing, Liliuokalani became queen after her brother, King Kalakaua, died in 1891. She tried to stave off U. S. control of Hawaii by returning power to the people and the monarchy; however, American businessmaen feared this would interfere with their interests, and they plotted her removal. Faced with armed Marines, the queen yielded her throne to avoid violence.
President Cleveland condemned this action and refused to annex Hawaii. Nevertheless, the businessmen, led by Sanford Dole, established their own government and fought off royal supporters. For allegedly plotting a return of the monarchy, the queen was placed under house arrest and for eight months was held prisoner in one room of Iolani Palace. After her release she went to Washington, D. C., where Cleveland welcomed her but was unable to help return her throne.
Liuokane lived in Hawaii until her death in 1917. She is remembered today as a brave and intelligent woman who cared deeply for her nation and her people. She composed more than 100 songs, including the famous Aloha Oe (Farewell to Thee), which she wrote the year Hawaii was annexed to the United States.
In 1900 Hawaii became a U.S. territory and in 1959 it became the 50th state. In 1993, Congress and President Clinton formally apologized for the overthrow of the kingdom of Hawaii.
