［EXISTING DRIVE FISHERIES］
＜Taiji＞
＿History＿

The people of Taiji have exploited large and small whales
since the early 17th century using hand-harpoons, the netwhaling
technique, shot guns and purse seines. The oldest
records of dolphin driving are from 1933. These have been
followed by additional opportunistic operations
(Hamanaka, 1979; Kasuya and Marsh, 1984).

太地の人々は17世紀初期以降、手持ち銛、網取り式捕鯨、ショットガン、
巻き網により大型、小型の鯨類を捕獲してきた。
最も古いイルカ追込み漁の記録は1933年のものである。
これ以後機会的な操業が加わるというかたちで漁が行われた
(Hamanaka, 1979; Kasuya and Marsh, 1984)。

The current drive fishery in Taiji was started in 1969 by a
group of fishermen using eight vessels and techniques
introduced from the Izu coast. lt became a regular
operation for short-finned pilot whales in 1971 and
expanded to striped dolphins in 1973. ln 1979, another
driving team was established in Taiji using seven vessels,
and the two teams competed until 1981 and recorded large
catches (Miyazaki, 1983). The two teams merged in 1982
and operated using the combined total vessels (15) under
the newly introduced license system. One of these vessels
ceased operation in 1984.

現在の太地の追込み漁は1969年に漁師の１グループが８隻の船を
用い、伊豆から導入された技術で始まった。
これが1971年以降のコビレゴンドウ漁以来、恒常的なものとなり、
1972年にスジイルカ漁に拡大された。
1979年にもう一つの追込み漁グループが７隻の船を使って太地で
結成され、1981年まで２グループが競争して大規模な捕獲記録を
残した（Miyazaki, 1983）。1982年に２グループが合併し、
統合した船腹（15）で新たに導入されたライセンス制のもとで
操業した。このうち１隻は1984年に操業を停止した。

The establishment of the drive fishery temporarily
forced the existing hand-harpoon fishery almost to
cessation and the small-type whaling operations to seek
fishing grounds outside the Taiji area (since 1980).
However the former was allowed to resume in 1991 on
various delphinids other than short-finned pilot whales,
and the latter in 1988 on short-finned pilot whales (see
Other Related Fisheries. below).

追込み漁の確立は一時的に既存の突きん棒漁をほぼ停止させ、
小型捕鯨操業は太地海域外で漁場を探すことを余儀なくされた
（1980年以降）。
しかし突きん棒漁は1991年にコビレゴンドウ以外の他種の
イルカ類を捕獲するということで再開を許可され、小型捕鯨は
1988年にコビレゴンドウの許可を得た（他の関連漁法の項参照）。
