"In dead calm conditions, the animal brings up slightly warmer water from below. We know it's the whales doing this because we've been able to follow some animals that have re-emerged to take another breath"
鯨の軌跡には下層の温かい水が上がってくるので、上空から赤外線カメラで捉えられるというのです。
”The flights from Australia's Casey station led by Natalie Kelly of the CSIRO aboard CASA-212 ski-equipped aircraft covered nearly 3000 nautical miles of survey route last December.”
豪州では既に一機の飛行機で３０００海里を観測したとしていますが、船からの目視に比べると見える範囲が格段に広いのを留意する必要があるでしょう。

"We're expecting in all likelihood to come up with lower [minke] numbers," he said.”
その結果ではパックアイスの中では多くの鯨が見られたがシャチの方がミンクより多かったと言っています。
こうなると天敵の方がその餌より多い訳で、かねて私が主張しているシャチの致死的調査による食性の研究がぜひ必要です。
