EUROPEAN SOCIAL FORUM
With all the talk of the European Social Forum swarming the city of Florence this weekend, it is good to understand the basics. From November 6 - 10, thousands of people are coming together in Florence for what is being called the one of the biggest European meetings in Italy. The theme of the forum is "Un'Altra Europa ・Possibile-Another Europe is Possible." Its coordinators are calling it an open discussion of issues to reflect on alternate ways to make the world better. The three main issues will include Neo-Liberalism/Globalism, War/Peace, and Rights/Demoracy/Citizenship of Europeans. Seminars and workshops will be held on Thursday, Friday and Saturday at the Fortezza da Basso. Over 20,000 people are currently registered (8000 foreigners) and thousands more are expected. There will be 18 main conferences, 140 seminars and 250 workshops translated into six different languages (Italian, English, French, Spanish, German and Greek) throughout the weekend. The issues of liberalism, war and rights will go more into depth on topics of Europe's relationship with the world, natural resources, democracy and sovereignty, economic alternatives and conflicts. Participants include Networks like Attac and Lilliput, Catholic Associations like Emmaus, Anti-War Groups like the Anti-War Coalition, Peasants and Fair Trade Organizations like Oxfam, Trade Unions foreign and international, Youth Groups of the left and Eastern European Organizations.
