Activists at the European Social Forum meeting in Florence are preparing for the main event of the weekend, a march against war with Iraq. Up to 200,000 people are expected to take part. The Social Forum is also serving as an opportunity for disparate anti-globalisation and pacifist groups to discuss the future of their movement.
But while the atmosphere has been positive Italian police are not taking any chances. Up to 6,000 officers are on standby, aiming to avoid the violent clashes at the G8 summit in Genoa that left one demonstrator dead.
Shopkeepers in Florence have reacted to the presence of thousands of activists by closing their doors. One local told reporters, "By the look of things you would already think the country was at war".
The city, famed for its Renaissance architecture, has been left largely deserted, with the usual stream of students and tourists reduced to a trickle.
