CONFUSED ABOUT THE SOCIAL FORUM?
Confused about this weekend's social forum here in Florence? Here is a quick explanation to answer a few pressing questions.
Why was Florence chosen to hold this controversial forum?
What is expected? Where did this fear come from?
To understand a little bit why some are worried about this weekend's events, you must understand a little bit about the cycles of protest in Italy, says Political Science Professor Wanrooij of the Syracuse University program here in Florence. In the 1920's Italians were protesting democracy, then after World War II they protested fascism then onto anti-capitalism. Now in 2002, it can be argued if Italy, and the world for that matter, have entered an era of anti-globalization. Globalization is a general term for the developments creating connectedness between wealthy nations. Globalism, what the European Social Forum is against, is an economic idealogy of neo-liberalism - a rule by the world market. The main arguments against agencies like the World Trade Organization, the International Monetary Fund, and the World Bank circle around business interests prevailing over others like child labor, workers rights, and environmental issues. Wanrooij says the city of Florence was chosen because of its local politics, to promote the Florence's international role and in an attempt to create a link between social movements and leftist political organizations. Last July in Genoa, Italy, protesters clashed with police and riots broke out leaving one man dead and thousands injured. Protesters felt like they were locked out of the meetings of the G8 (leaders of the 8 wealthiest nations in the world) and the Black Bloc (an anarchist group that emerged in Seattle, Washington during the anti-WTO protests) became violent. Now, Florentines are worried that the same may happen here since protests are expected. Organizers of the Social Forum have taken extreme measures to ensure enough police and carabinieri protection in every piazza throughout the city. What happened is Genoa is not expected to happen in Florence, says one organizer of the forum, Blessed are the Peacemakers representative Lisa Clark.
