Jalal Talabani, the Iraqi president, has asked for a long-term US
military presence in Iraq, saying his country needs two permanent
US air bases to deter "foreign interference."
タラバニ大統領は、イラクでの米軍の長期駐留を求めました。
「外国の干渉」を阻止する為に二つの恒久的米空軍基地が必要だと述べました。

"I think we will be in need of American forces for a longtime -
even two military bases to prevent foreign interference,"
Talabani told The Washington Post in an interview published on Monday.
「私は我々が米軍の長期駐留を必要としていると思います。
それどころか外国の干渉を阻止する二つの軍事基地さえ必要だと」
タラバニは月曜日発表の「ワシントン・ポスト」のインタビューで述べました。

"I don't ask to have 100,000 American soldiers -
10,000 soldiers and two air bases would be enough."
「私は10万人の米兵を頼んでいはいません。
一万人の兵士と二つの空軍基地で十分でしょう」

The president indicated that the bases would be most welcome
in Kurdistan, an autonomous region in northern Iraq that has
practised de facto self-government since the 1991 Gulf War.
大統領は、1991年の湾岸戦争以降事実上の自治を行う北イラクの自治地域である
クルディスタンで、基地が最も歓迎されるであろうという意向を示しました。

"In some places Sunnis want the Americans to stay," he argued.
"Sunnis think the main danger is coming from Iran now."
「いくつかの場所では、スンニ派はアメリカ人が滞在することを望んでいます。
スンニ派は現在、主要な危険がイランから来ていると考えています」
