An Arab foreign fighter sits in his bunker and reads the Koran
as U.S. planes bomb Falluja. The mujahideen, or holy warriors,
battled for control of the city in fighting that left Falluja
in ruins and displaced more than 200,000 residents.


With Kalashinikovs in their laps and copies of the Koran in their hands,
they stared at us suspiciously.
The silence was punctuated by the sound of motar shelling.
With each explosion, the fighters would cry,“Allahu Akbar.”
Eventually, the mujahideen started talking：

But mostly they were interested in converting us to Islam.
