Health minister denies UN report on increasing Iraq child malnutrition
http://www.iraq.net/displayarticle6059.html
"NewsBAGHDAD (AFP) - Iraq's interim health minister on Sunday flatly denied a report from the United Nations Children's Fund, UNICEF, that chronic malnutrition in young Iraqi children had almost doubled in the last two years."
Jean Ziegler, the UN Human Rights Commission's special expert on the right to food." The situation facing Iraqi youngsters is "a result of the war led by coalition forces," said Ziegler"という風に非難してるようです。
Malnutrition, which is exacerbated by a lack of clean water and inadequate sanitation,"不衛生による水があげられてます。
"Ziegler also cited an October 2004 U.S. study that estimated as many as 100,000 more Iraqis - many of them women and children - had died since the start of the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq than would normally have died."
"The authors of the report in the British medical journal the Lancet - researchers from Johns Hopkins University, Columbia University and the Al-Mustansiriya University in Baghdad - conceded their data were of "limited precision," because they depended on the accuracy of household interviews used for the study. The interviewers were Iraqi, most of them doctors."
"International aid efforts and the U.N. oil-for-food program helped reduce the ruinous impact of sanctions, and the rate of acute malnutrition among the youngest Iraqis gradually dropped from a peak of 11 percent in 1996 to 4 percent in 2002. But the invasion in March 2003 and the widespread looting in its aftermath severely damaged the basic structures of governance in Iraq, and persistent violence across the country slowed the pace of reconstruction almost to a halt."
