Two Japanese journalists, Iraqi translator killed in Iraq

Fri May 28, 8:00 AM ET Add World - AFP to My Yahoo!

MAHMUDIYA, Iraq (AFP) - Two Japanese journalists and their Iraqi translator were killed in a rocket-propelled grenade attack on their vehicle south of Baghdad on Thursday, the head of the Mahmudiya hospital revealed.

"One Japanese and his Iraqi translator are in the morgue but the police told me they had the body of a second Japanese," Imad al-Malaki said Friday.

"According to my information, the incident happened at 6:00 pm (1400 GMT) between Mahmudiya and Latifiya. A rocket was fired at their car. The vehicle was incinerated and their corpses charred," he added.

An AFP reporter was able to see the faces of the two dead still at the morgue.

By the site of the attack, the journalists' white GMC was completely charred, the back doors riddled with dozens of bullet holes.

After the RPG was fired, the driver apparently lost control of the vehicle and smashed into a tree. A pair of shoes could be seen by the wreckage in a pool of blood.

The police explained that the second Japanese reporter was not immediately killed in the rocket attack and was apparently executed by his attackers later.

"He was found on the outskirts of the town. He was in his boxer shorts and had bullets between his eyes. It looks like he was only wounded and that the attackers took him and later executed him," said a police officer from Mahmudiya, which lies 30 kilometres (20 miles) south of the capital.

The policeman, who wished to remain anonymous, said that Japanese embassy staff and Baghad police forces had already taken the body.

Sources at the Japanese embassy said only that they were investigating reports that the freelance journalists had been killed.

Early Friday, Tokyo's top government spokesman said that two Japanese journalists had been attacked in Iraq (news - web sites) south of Baghdad as they headed north from Samawa, where 550 Japanese troops are based.

He identified the two men as Shinsuke Hashida, a 61-year-old freelance journalist and veteran of war-zone reporting based in Bangkok, and his nephew Kotaro Ogawa, 33, from the western Japan city of Tottori.

In Mahmudiya, Sabah Sabah Najmedin identified the body of the dead Iraqi as his brother.

"One of them is my brother. He was their translator. I recognised his nose, his belt and his jeans. He was Mohammed. He was 48," the distressed man told AFP.

Another hospital source said the driver of the car was wounded, but that his relatives had taken him to Baghdad.

An award-winning Polish television journalist and an Algerian colleague with Polish nationality were killed on May 7 in a similar attack at Latifiya, in the same area.
