Some 25 journalists have been killed since the March 2003 invasion of Iraq by US-led forces, making it the most dangerous place in the world to cover news, the US-based Committee to Protect Journalists said earlier this month.
In a separate incident Thursday, the son of the Iraqi Governing Council's only woman member, Salama al-Khufaji, was also killed when her convoy was attacked at Yusufiyah, not far from Mahmudiya.
In November last year, two Japanese diplomats were gunned down in Iraq en route to a reconstruction conference. The killings shocked the nation and marked the first Japanese casualties in Iraq since the US-led invasion began last March.
Five Japanese nationals were held hostage by insurgents in April but all of them were released unhurt.
Their ordeal provoked a furious backlash from politicians, the media and sections of the public for irresponsibility which put the government to great trouble and expense to secure their release.
Japan sent its troops on a non-combat mission focusing on reconstruction efforts and a law passed in 2003 is supposed to restrict the contingent's activities to combat-free zones.
According to media watchdogs, at least 29 journalists have been killed in Iraq since March 2003, when the US-led coalition launched its invasion of the country
