ABSTRACT

U11eung lsland Written by a Royal Prosecutor
Kyu Won Rii
King Gojong appointed Kyu Won Rii as a Royal Prosecutor for U11eung
lsland in 1881. Mr.Rii leR for U11eung lsland on 1 0th of Apri1, 1882,
stayed in U11eung island to prosecute by land and sea routes for 10 days,
and retum to Seou1. While he was in U11eung lsland, he wrote the diary
including daily activities, topography and ecological in柘rmation on the
island,persons who were in the island at that time, Japanese cutting down
timber illegally, and other detailed in拓rmation as well as the nrst dran for
the omcial report to the King. Therefore,the diary of prosecution on
Ulleung lsland is very important and valuable document for better
understanding U11eung lsland in 1882 and f1)r the relation between Korea
and Japan in the late 1 9th century・
The purpose of this research is to examine the contents and to analyze
び//四昭一7)θGe四7-c/1α/-j/-がfiom the viewpoint of hlstorical geography, and
to review Mr. Rii's life as an omcer. Because of the importance of the
diary,other purpose of this research is to nnd the original contents of the
diary and Gム叩晶晶皿,the nrst draft of the omcial report to the King, and

for Possible residential areas. He suggested 14 possible ports along the sea
coast indlcating dimculties for the constmction of ports.
The reasons King KOJong sent the Royal Prosecutor to the UIleung lsland
are to nnd out whether there are places to make residential areas, and to
make clear the name of U11eung island and to have better knowledge of
usando. Sending the Royal Prosecutor was very meaningful and we11-timed,
because King KOJong had in his mind to protect the territory of Joseon and
it is needed to set up the relation to Japan.
U11eung lsland was protected as a part of Joseon Dynasty, because the
Royal Prosecutor was sent in the proper time period; Kyo Won Rii dealt
faithfully with his duty,and King Kojong had a strong mind to keep
UIleung lsland as a Part of our land. Therefore,the settlement in UIleung
lsland by law in 1883 was very important event in the history. Without this,
Dokdo cannot be a part of Korean land as weII.
