Geom-Chal-Il-Gi(the Diary of Prosecution) on Ulleung Island written by a Royal Prosecutor

King Gojong appointed Lee Kyu Won as a Royal Prosecutor for U11eung
lsland in 1881. Mr.Lee left for U1leung lsland on 10th of Apri1,1882,stayed in U1leung island to prosecute by land and sea routes for 10 days,and retun to Seoul. While he was in U1leung lsland,he wrote the diary including daily activities, topography and ecological information on the island,persons who were in the island at that time,Japanese cutting down timber illegally,and other detailed information as well as the first draft for the official report to the King. Therefore,the diary of prosecution on
Ulleung lsland is very important and valuable document for better
understanding Ulleung lsland in 1882 and for the relation between Korea and Japan in the late 19th century.



The Royal Prosecutor Lee Kyu Won was born in March 19, 1833 in lunar
calender and passed away in November 11, 1901 in lunar calender when he was 69 years old. He passed the military service examination when he was 19 years old and started his career as a Seonjeonkwan in 1858. He was appointed as a governor of many local areas including Tongjin[Gimpo] and JeJu island. He gave good administration wherever he served as a local governor,because he always considered local residents first, and exposed and well managed the problems.   Because of these achievement as a governor there are many monument in commemoration of his remarkable executive services. According to his remarkable services and high integrity as an officer, he was granted a posthumous epithet as Jangheegone.

Lee Kyu Won was appointed as a Royal Prosecutor in 1881 and visited
U11eung Island to investigate the island in 1882 with 106 persons.   He prosecuted the island through in land and sea routes for 10 days. While he was in the island, he met 132 Koreans and 8 Japanese. lf it is induded persons he did not met, there were about 170 Koreans mainly repairing ships and collecting herbs, and 78 Japanese lumbcnng illegally.

The diary is very important as the original document to reconstruct the island in 1882, because topography, geomorphology, climate, animal, ptants,and products of the island were recorded in it. He recommended Naridong as a appropriate residential area, because the area is flat and large enough for 1,000 households. He also recommended
