[Boiling equipment]
At the time with which we are now dealing it was not known with any
degree of certainty how large a percentage of the total oil content of the
whale was contained in its three main constituents - blubber, meat, and
bone. Not till the end of the 1920S was this matter investigated in an
entirely satisfactory technical-scientific manner.
At the Stromness station in South Georgia at the start of the 1925-6
season, when the whale was still comparatively lean, the three parts of
fourteen whales (eleven blue and three fin) were boiled separately,
producing a total of 1,596 barrels (266 tons) of oil, of which the blubber
accounted for 620 barrels (38.8 per cent), the meat 515 barrels (32.4
per cent), and the bones 461 barrels (28.8 per cent). In other words, the
two last-mentioned constituents together provided 22.4 per cent more
oil than the blubber. Individual animals would vary enormously: the oil
extracted from the meat and the bones would vary from 47 per cent to
73 per cent, and consequently in the blubber from 27 per cent to 53
per cent. The investigation revealed that the average composition of a
whale weighing 100 tons was as follows:

of dry material, and 48.6 tons of water. From a large blue whale of 120
tons the following could be extracted:
