<Izu Peninsula, Pacific coast of central Japan>

The Bureau of Fisheries (1911) listed nine villages that
opportunistically hunted dolphins on the Izu coasts and in
nearby waters. Eight of them (Ugusu, Tago, Ito, Inatori,
Komuro (= Kawana), Nishiura, Uchiura and Heda) were
drive fisheries but one village (Hiratsuka) on the northern
Sagami Bay used a drag net due to the lack of a suitable bay
for driving. The oldest record of the operation was in 1619
at Uchiura (Japan Academy, 1982). Several other villages
are also recorded to have carried out drives (Arari, Toi.
Ishibu, Ajiro, Futo, Kawazu, Yukawa, Matsubara and
Ajiro) according to the Board of Education of Shizuoka
Prefecture (1986; 1987). However, most of the villages on
suitable bays in this area that had a sufficient number of
vessels could have carried out opportunistic dolphin
driving and the above list may not be complete.

＜伊豆半島、中部日本太平洋岸＞
農商務省水産局（1911）は伊豆沿岸とその周辺で時として機会的に
イルカを捕獲していた９の村落を列挙している。このうち８カ所
（宇久須、田子、伊東、稲取、小室（＝川奈）、西浦、内浦、戸田）
は追込み漁をしていたが、相模湾北部の一ケ村（平塚）は追い込みに
適当な湾を持たず、引き網を利用していた。
この漁のもっとも古い記録は1619年の内浦のものである（Japan
Academy, 1982）。他のいくつかの集落も静岡県教育委員会
（1986；1987）によると追込み漁を行っていた（安良里、土肥、
石部、網代、富戸、川津、湯川、松原）。いずれにしてもこの
地域で適当な湾をもつ集落は適宜追込み漁を行うのに十分な数の
船を持っていたので、上記リストは不完全であるかもしれない。
