The catch in the Goto Islands in the 18th century
included at least bottlenose dolphins and false killer whales
(based on a drawing by Kisaki (ms.) cited in Hawley
(1960)). The Bureau of Fisheries (1911) listed takes of false
killer whales ('nyudo-iruka' or 'bouzu-iruka') and 'haseiruka'
or 'ma-iruka' which may represent common dolphin
and/or other dolphins reaching 2.4m (Ito, 1986). Kasuya
(1985b) listed annual catches of dolphins in the Goto
Islands for 1965-1982 by species. Judging from the large
number of catches (51 - 1,182 individuals/year) and
method of species identification (the author was present),
bottlenose dolphins, false killer whales, common dolphins
and spotted dolphins may have been taken by either
driving or 'assisted stranding', which are hard to separate
in the fishery. The main seasons were stated to be spring,
autumn and winter (Bureau of Fisheries' 1911).

オキゴンドウを含んでいる（Hawley(1960)に引用されたKisaki (ms.)
の描画）。水産局（1911）はオキゴンドウ（「入道イルカ」ある
いは「坊主イルカ」）と「ハセイルカ」または「マイルカ」を
捕獲種としてあげているが、後者はマイルカおよび/あるいは

Kasuya(1985b)は五島列島での1965−1982年のイルカ類年間
を種類別に列挙している。多数の捕獲（年間51〜1,182）を

オキゴンドウ、マイルカ、マダライルカが追込み漁か、あるいは
「誘導されたストランディング（座礁）」によって捕られた
と判定した。この両漁法を区別するのは難しい。
主要漁期は春、秋および冬と記されている（水産局1911）。
We have not included in the statistics an incident of the
'stranding' of 582 Risso's dolphins at Miiraku (Goto
Islands) in November 1990, because there was no evidence
of human interference that might have caused the dolphins
to be left on the beach during low tide in the morning,
although there may possibly have been human 'assistance'
when the school entered the harbour the previous evening
(there was at least a short period of effort, using a net, to
keep the school in the harbour during the night).
われわれは1990年11月の三井楽（五島列島）で起った582頭の
ハナゴンドウの「座礁」という事件を統計に含めなかった。
その理由は人為的な影響が朝の干潮時にイルカが浜辺に残されて
いたという出来事の原因になっていたという証拠が無かったから
である。しかしその前の晩、群が港湾に入った時に人為的な
「補助」があったという可能性はある（少なくとも前の晩、
網を使って群をその晩、港湾内に保持しようとする短い時間の
努力はあった）。
