The use of nets for hunting dolphins was first recorded in
1377 at Arikawa on the northwestern coast of the Goto
Islands (Japan Academy, 1982), and was interpreted as an
indication of a drive fishery. Later, the Bureau of Fisheries
(1911) listed another village Uonome, near Arikawa, as
operating a drive fishery. The operation was opportunistic,
but had an established system to share the catch among
village members. Tsutsumi et al. (1961) recorded recent
operations at Arikawa and Miiraku on the southwestern
coast of the Goto Islands, and at nearby Tobishima Island
off northern Kyushu. These locations were in long deep
bays along the coast. Ito (1986) reported the total number
of dolphins taken by this fishery between 1965 and 1985
and indicated that the operation, at least until 1985, was
partly for dolphin culling. None of the fishing villages on
the Goto Islands acquired a drive fishery license in 1982,
and the fishery was discontinued except for the prefecture
bounty of dolphin culling; as noted above the bounty for
Nagasaki Prefecture lasted from 1971 to April 1991.

＜五島列島、東シナ海＞

網を使ったイルカ漁の最初の記録は、1377年の五島列島北西岸、有川
のものである（Japan Academy, 1982）。これは追込み漁を意味している
と理解されている。後に水産局(1911)は有川に近い別の村、魚目村を
追込み漁で記載している。操業は適宜機会的だったが、村民への
獲物の配分についてはシステムが出来上がっていた。

Tsutsumi et al. (1961)は五島列島南西部、有川、三井楽および近傍の
北九州沖飛島での最近の操業記録を記している。いずれも沿岸の長く、
深い湾に位置している。

Ito (1986)は1965年から1985年にかけてのこの漁労によるイルカ捕獲
総数を報告しており、少なくとも1985年まではこの操業は部分的に
イルカ駆除・間引きのためのものだったと述べている。

五島列島のどの集落も1982年のライセンスを取得しておらず、
イルカ漁は県の報償によるイルカ駆除を例外としてそれ以外は
断絶した。先に記したように、長崎県の報奨制度は1971年から
1991年４月まで継続した。
