さあ！諸君！捕鯨問題だ！

A drive fishery was operated between 1944 and 1963 by
three villages on lki Island (Goonoura, lshidamura and
Toobu) taking bottlenose dolphins, Risso's dolphins, false
killer whales and some unidentified dolphin species
(Anonymous, 1988). The operation was opportunistic and
had almost ceased by around 1968 due to the low price of
dolphin meat and a decline in dolphin occurrence
(Anonymous. 1988).

1944〜1963年に壱岐島の３つの集落（郷ノ浦、石田村、東部）で
追込み漁が行われ、ハンドウイルカ、ハナゴンドウ、オキゴンドウ、
いくらかの非同定種が捕獲された(Anonymous, 1988)。
操業は機会的であり、1968年頃にはほとんど停止された。
理由はイルカ肉の低価格とイルカ出現の減少である(Anonymous. 1988)。

A bounty for culling dolphins was instigated in 1957 by
the Katsumoto Fishery Cooperative Union and Katsumoto
Town (Nagasaki Prefecture) as a result of the fishery dolphin
conflict. Financial support was given by Nagasaki
Prefecture in September 1974 (lto, 1986) but this ceased in
April 1991. After attempts to use a whaling canon, handharpoons
and shot guns, Katsumoto fishermen started
driving to cull dolphins in 1976 and the culling expanded to
some other islands in the prefecture. Large catches
continued until around 1986. Catch statistics are available
in Kasuya (1985b) and Ito (1986) for earlier years, and in
Japanese Progress Reports to the IWC for seasons since
1979* under the item 'driving' in the Nagasaki Prefecture
(both the 'culling' and 'take for human consumption' are
combined).

1957年に勝本漁業協同組合と勝本町（長崎県）からイルカ駆除・間引き
（culling）への報奨金が提唱された。漁業とイルカとの利害対立に起因
するものである。
長崎県による財政補助が1974年９月に開始されたが（lto, 1986）、
これは1991年4月に停止された。

勝本の漁民は捕鯨砲と手持ち銛で試みたのち、1976年に追込み漁による
駆除、間引きを開始し、この駆除、間引きは圏内の他の島々へ拡大した。
大規模な捕獲は1986年頃まで続いた。初期の捕獲統計は Kasuya (1985b)
および Ito (1986) に示されており、1979年以降の漁期については
IWCの日本プログレス報告中、長崎県における「追い込み」の項目
で記されている（ここでは「駆除・間引き」と「人間の消費のための捕獲」
が統合されている）。
