＜Tsushima and lki lslands, Sea of Japan/East China Sea

At least fìve driving teams operated on the Tsushima
lslands situated either between the Sea of Japan and East
China Sea, or between Kyushu and Korea (Ohyama and
Shibahara, 1987); three in the Asaji-wan and one each in
the Tairyo-wan and Miura-wan, all located in the long deep
bays of this complex coastline. The opportunistic
operations involved a total of 20 villages (three to seven
villages per team). The first written reference to the fishery
was in 1404, in the tax records of one of the harbours. The
local importance of the fishery was witnessed by the
presence of a taxation system under the local governor and
by the relocation of one of the villages to a better operation
site in the 17th century. Although the use of nets there was
first recorded in 1846 (Ohyama and Shibahara, 1987), it is
possible that they were used prior to that time, as they were
used in the Goto Islands, only about 150km away.

日本海と東シナ海の間、あるいは日本と韓国の間に位置する対馬諸島では
少なくとも５つのチームがイルカ追込み漁を行っていた (Ohyama and
Shibahara, 1987)。浅茅湾で３組、大漁湾と三浦湾でそれぞれ１組である。
すべてこの複雑な海岸線の深い湾の中に位置している。

不規則に時折行われる漁には総計20の村が参加していた（一鯨組
あたり3−７カ村）。この漁について書き残された一番古い記録は
1404年のもので、ある港の租税記録である。この漁が地域的な
重要性を持っていたということは、地方統治者による租税システムに
組み入れられていたこと、ある村では17世紀に操業のしやすい
位置に村を移転させたということで伺い知れる。

網の使用が最初に記録されるのは1846年だが（Ohyama and Shibahara, 1987）
それ以前にここで網捕り式が行われていたというのはあり得ること
である。五島列島ではそれ以前から網取りが行われており、ここから
の距離はわずか150kmである。

Although Ohyama and Shibahara (1987) stated that the
last drive operation in the Goto lslands took place in 1948,
we believe there were several additional drives or 'assisted
strandings' at least until 1979, as indicated in the catch
statistics presented by Kasuya (1985b). No groups
obtained licenses in 1982 and the Tsushima Islands
operation has ceased.

Ohyama and Shibahara (1987)は五島列島で最後に追込み漁が
行われたのは1948年だと述べているが、われわれは少なくとも
1979年までいくらかの追込み漁あるいは「人為的補助による
ストランディング（座礁）」が行われたと考えている。これは
Kasuya (1985b)による捕獲統計が示すところである。

The species driven in the Tsushima Islands were
bottlenose dolphins and false killer whales (identified on a
photograph of Ohyama and Shibahara, 1987), and/or
common dolphins, bottlenose dolphins and false killer
whales (judged from statistics in Kasuya (1985b)). The
season for these opportunistic operations has not been
recorded.

対馬諸島で追い込まれたイルカ種はハンドウイルカ、
オキゴンドウ（Ohyama and Shibahara, 1987の写真による
同定）および/あるいはマイルカ、ハンドウイルカ、オキゴンドウ
（Kasuya (1985b)の統計からの判定）である。
この機会的操業の季節は記録されていない。
