さあ！諸君！捕鯨問題だ！

The dolphin species caught on the Noto coast included
Pacific white-sided dolphins ('kama-iruka'), false killer
whales ('nyudo-iruka') and unidentifiable dolphins called
'ma-iruka', which formed large schools (Bureau of
Fisheries, 1911). Earlier exploitation of these species was
indicated by the excavation of abundant skeletal remains at
the Mawaki archaeological site dating back 7,000 years
(Hiraguchi, 1986).

能登で捕獲されたイルカの種類は、カマイルカ、オキゴンドウ
（入道イルカ）、同定されていない「マイルカ」であり、これは
大きな群をなしていた（Bureau of Fisheries, 1911）。
7000年遡ることができる真脇の考古学的発掘サイトで豊富に
残されている骨により、これらの種の初期における捕獲が確認
された（Hiraguchi, 1986）。

Tsutsumi et al. (1961) recorded drive-fishing for
bottlenose dolphins and false killer whales at Ohmishima
in Yamaguchi Prefecture, on the southwestern coast of the
Sea of Japan. Such operations may have been carried out
opportunistically at this village, which was known for its
history of net-whaling for large cetaceans. It did not
acquire an operation license in 1982.

Tsutsumi et al. (1961)は日本海南西部、山口県青海島のハンドウイルカ
およびオキゴンドウ追込み漁を記録している。大型鯨類に対する
網取り捕鯨の歴史で知られているこの集落では、このような
操業が機会的、偶発的に行われていたのであろう。ここは1982年に
操業ライセンスを取得しなかった。

The village of Ine (35°27'N, 135°30'E) on the northwest
coast of the Wakasa Bay, which had a long history of
opportunistic net-whaling, is also known to have operated
opportunistic dolphin driving during 1732-1901 from the
catch and selling records preserved in the village (Wakuta,
1989). Although details of the records have not been
analysed yet, the catch included an unidentified delphinid
'mairuka' and another species 'nyudoiruka' which is
presumed to be the false killer whaÌe.

若狭湾北西岸にある伊根（北緯35°27’東経135°30’）は網取り捕鯨を
機会的、偶発的に行っていたという長い歴史がある。集落に保存
されていた捕獲と販売の記録から、ここでは1732-1901年の
間に、日和見的（機会的、偶発的）にイルカ追込み漁も行われて
いたことがわかる。
記録はまだ詳細に分析されていないが、捕獲に含まれていたのは
同定不能の「マイルカ」とこれとは別種の「入道イルカ」である。
後者はオキゴンドウであると推測される。
