Dear Mr/Mrs. Humanbondage,
Thank you for pointing out the deficiencies of my message. I can see that you are one decent Chinese who can and is willing to see all the deficiencies of China and of Chinese society.
In my message, I didnot deny the fact that China had many social problems to start with. I agreed (earlier) that China needs to improve numerous things before she can truly stand as a strong and respectful nation in the world. For examples, gender equality (though thesituation in urban centres are quite acceptable, that in the countryside is still miserable), racial equality (I think this is the most important if China is to remain politically stable), perfecting the laws for a market economy (not only is this crucial toChinese but as well as foreign investors), easying the political atmosphere, and so on.
There are many ills we must deal with before we can advance. However, when I went to see what many Chinese intellectuals post on Chinese message boards, I seethat China will have a bright future. Although there are unpleasant posts about many foreign countries (such as USA, Japan), there are a lot more of those that reflect on China's own weaknesses. By being able to see and frankly point out the weaknessesof China, Chinese intellectuals (or the entire Chinese population, I should say) have a solid foundation for their mission of "saving the motherland."
To be frank with you, since I was born in Hong Kong, I don't know what they teach the kids inthe mainland about Japan or America. All I know is that there are many pro-American Chinese intellectuals (well, maybe not as many after the bombing of the embassy), and there is almost no one who has a good image of Japan. "Why?" I asked myself. I haveno doubt that it is probably a product of the century-old anti-Japanese education. However, there are many of those who are willing to see the strengths of Japan and make a good analysis of them for applying the same to China. The only thing that maybe a bit "dangerous" is that they do it in order to just surpass Japan. There are not many people who do it simply because they like Japan or have a craving for Japanese culture (maybe there are some, but definitely not many).
