Rousing finale to peaceful protest in Florence
There is relief in Florence tonight that a massive demonstration passed off without violence.
'No to war in Iraq' was the main message of the event which organisers claim attracted more than a million people. Even the police figures are enormous, around four hundred and fifty thousand.
It was the climax of the first European Social Forum - a four day mass gathering of anti-globalisation and other protest groups.
The gigantic march snaked its way around the city amid a blast of colour and beating drums.
Many residents were fearful of what could happen but the demonstration has the good wishes of others.
The business community was taking no chances - most shops in the city centre closed for the duration.
7000 police were on call but most were kept in reserve with commanders opting for a low-profile approach.
The event was much bigger than last year's protest against the G8 summit in Genoa. That was overshadowed by rioting and the fatal shooting of one demonstrator.
The spotlight was once again on the Italian police. But cooperation rather than confrontation seems to have been the priority for those attending this rally, and those policing it.
