One Israeli killed, 4 hurt in W. Bank shooting attacks


An Israeli youth was killed and three others were wounded in two shooting attacks near the West Bank city of Hebron on Friday afternoon.

The first shooting attack took place adjacent to the Beit Haggai settlement. Two gunmen opened fire on a hitchhiking station, killing a 17-year-old, seriously wounding a 14-year-old, and moderately wounding another individual.

Shortly afterwards, the same gunmen continued to the Adorai'm junction, near Dura, where they opened fire on a car, lightly wounding two people. Their baby sustained very light wounds.

Israel Defense Forces troops and security forces searched the scenes of the shootings for evidence.

The wounded were evacuated by Magen David Adom workers to an area hospital.

According to an initial investigation, the two shooters came from areas under the control of the Palestinian Authority and after carrying out the attack they fled to the Al-Fawar refugee camp south of Hebron.

The commander of the Lavi battalion which operates in the Hebron sector told Israel that the incident is further proof of the terror organizations' attempts to disrupt the calm. There was no specific early warning of the attack, he said.

The Masoud Ayad Brigades, linked to Fatah, claimed responsibility for the shootings. The cell was named after Masoud Ayad, who was killed by the IDF in Gaza in 2001, on the claim that he served as a conduit between Hezbollah in Lebanon and local Palestinian cells. If the claim for responsibility is authentic, it may hint at Hezbollah involvement in the attack.

"Continued acts of Palestinian terrorism demonstrate to everyone the necessity that the Palestinian Authority fulfill its obligation to the international community and start effective and ongoing measures against the terrorist organizations who are trying to destroy any chance of reconciliation between Israelis and Palestinians," said Mark Regev, a Foreign Ministry spokesman.

Responding to the attacks, the Yesha Council said Friday afternoon that, "Terror chases those who run away from it. We warned in the past, with advancements made ahead of the implementation of the disengagement plan, that the continued flight from the land would bring about an increased effort made by terrorist groups to carry out attacks."

"The terrorist recognize Israel's weakness, and the flight from the Gaza Strip encourages them to continue implementing attacks, until they chase us out of all parts of Eretz Yisrael," Zvika Bar-Hai, the head of the south Mount Hebron regional council, said after the attack.

Earlier Friday, two Israelis were lightly wounded in separate incidents of violence.

opened fire on his car near the West Bank town of Tul Karm, the Israel Defense Forces said. The event occurred after the IDF granted permission to 100 Israeli worshipers to pray at the nearby holy site of Joshua's Tomb.

An Israeli was also lightly wounded by shrapnel when militants in the Gaza Strip fired a mortar at the settlement of Netzarim, the IDF said.
