Sharon, for his part, insisted that, despite his own doubts over the plan, he would do everything he could to push the road map forward. "This is not a happy decision," he told the Likud activists. "We will need to make painful concessions, and if the process moves forward, and I will make every effort to see that it does, we will make painful concessions such as these," Sharon said, quickly adding that he would draw the line at any concessions compromising Israel's security.
"I know that there are doubts. Everyone has doubts. I have doubts as well. But I know one thing: We must try."

Avneri suggested that in the end, hawks might prevail in their struggle against the road map. "I've known Mr. Sharon more than 40 years, and I have learned one thing: Never listen to what he says, always pay attention to what he does," said Avneri, adding that in any event:
"The decision is important. I do not dismiss it, on the contrary, I derive great satisfaction from it, because I remember that 50 years ago, there weren't 50 people in the entire world who supported the two-state vision.
"What happened yesterday, was that this vision was accepted by the entire world, the United States, the Arab world, the Palestinian people, and the government of Israel. This is a step of supreme importance, and it is irreversible."

"I am happy that the government of Israel, as right-wing as it is at the moment, took this decision. It's tough for me not to smile in irony, a kind of sad, bitter irony, on all these 'heroes' who stood on the balcony with shouts of 'murderer' and 'traitor', and all the years since with people denouncing 'the Oslo murderers.'"
Now, Rabin-Pelossof said, "All those people who didn't want Oslo have gotten the road map. I'm not sure it's a better plan for us."
