On the face of it, Sharon's gamble in acceding to overwhelming U.S. pressure and granting guarded support to the road map seemed to be a sound one. A Yedioth Ahronoth newspaper opinion poll published Monday showed that 56 percent of Israelis responding believed that the nation should agree to the road map, versus 34 percent who said the plan should be rejected.
Perhaps more daunting for settlers and their supporters on the right, 66 percent of respondents said they believed Sharon capable of evacuating settlements and withdrawing from Israeli-held territory under the provisions of the road map.
Yedioth Ahronoth 紙の世論調査によると、56％のイスラエル人がロードマップ支持。

Haetzni was unfazed by the poll. Asked about apparent majority backing for the road map, Haetzni shocked Israelis by telling state-owned radio:
"Yes, of course. And the Jews also willingly boarded those trains [to the Nazi concentration camps], believing everything that the Germans told them. The Jews have always posed a danger to themselves. They have brought Holocausts upon themselves throughout the course of their history. "

"The state of Israel, by means of its most right-wing government, recognized yesterday that the solution to the conflict is the establishment of a Palestinian state alongside Israel, and peace between the two countries," said Avneri, who also fought at Latrun.
"This is a historic decision. I only fear that Ariel Sharon will do everything he can to avoid carrying it out."
