”Koizumi unswayed by Chinese criticism over visits to war shrine”
Sun Oct 17,11:57 PM ET
TOKYO, (AFP) - Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi says he remains unswayed by China's criticism of his visits to a Tokyo war shrine, saying the Japanese should choose for themselves how to honour their dead.
"I know the issue is not pleasant for China. But as a Japanese, I do not think it is bad to visit, pay respect and give thanks to the war dead," Koizumi said during a legislative hearing.
"Just because foreign countries are saying our way of respecting the dead does not suit them, I question if it is appropriate to obey their opinions," Koizumi said.
The Yasukuni shrine honours the 2.5 million Japanese fallen in modern wars including convicted war criminals such as World War II-era leader general Hideki Tojo.
China, which was occupied by Japan from 1931 to 1945, has voiced outrage over Koizumi's repeated visits to the shrine. The dispute has clouded over relations between the neighbours, whose leaders have not visited each other's country for three years.
Despite his insistence on visiting the shrine, Koizumi said he hoped to strengthen ties with China.
"Japan-China relations are very important. Prosperity of China does not threaten Japan. Rather, it creates opportunities for Japan," Koizumi said.
"I want to expand the friendly ties between Japan and China. I hope to continue having summit talks in the future."
Koizumi held only a brief chat with Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao on the sidelines of Asia-Europe talks this month in Vietnam, rather than a full-fledged bilateral meeting.
