Japan's constitution, adopted in 1947 during the U.S. postwar occupation of the country, renounces the use of military force.
The Japanese troops in Iraq will be armed with pistols, rifles, machine guns and anti-tank guns to use in self defense only.

Japan’s post-war constitution bans the use of force to settle international disputes. The largest opposition Democratic Party has vowed not to send troops to Iraq if it wins the next election. Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi’s staunch moral support for the US-led invasion of Iraq was opposed by a majority of Japanese, according to opinion polls at the time.

Japan's constitution prohibits the use of force in international disputes, but the Japanese Government argues the country is entitled to exercise self-defence and the troops will be able to return fire if they are attacked.
