Your doubt on my Japanese should make sense very much. And I would never take it as a censure to me but I realize you are admiring me. So, tanks a lot for it.

Let's me talk more about these hostages.

Terrorists in Iraq have taken three Japanese civilians hostage. They were threatening to kill them if Japan did not withdraw its 500 coalition troops from the country. Once again, I saw the strategy. Isolate the U.S. from the rest of the civilized world.

Raise the price for fighting terrorism. Wage a psychological warfare campaign not on the battlefield, but in the homes of comfortable people who want no part of a street fight with thugs. It's tempting to turn away from this darkness.

This was not the message of liberators. This was the act of occupiers, of conquerors. Now, following a week in which the war in Iraq took a deadly turn for the worse for increasingly isolated U.S. troops, it has become clear that brazenly waving the Stars and Stripes was unwittingly prescient.

The battle for hearts and minds in Iraq has been suspended, replaced by a fight for territory and control.
