President Bush says he urged Chinese President Hu to meet with the Dalai Lama to learn that the exiled Tibetan religious leader has no desire for an independent Tibet. Mr. Bush said he discussed the idea with Mr. Hu. But, he did not say how the Chinese leader reacted. Mr. Bush met with the Dalai Lama earlier this month. The Dalai Lama said then that Tibet should remain in China for economic development reasons. He also said the Tibetan people would be forced to decide their own future unless China gave them some kind of real self-rule. China has occupied Tibet since nineteen fifty. The Dalai Lama has lived in India since nineteen fifty-nine.
