According to a person who is Chinese-English bilingual, here is an excerpt/translation of a Chinese media report.

As you see here, "Japan loves Chinese whores" is an interpretation of the newspaper's, or the audience's, who were very sensitive due to the latest series of events, and the resulting anti-Japan mania. The lewd but innocent act of those students were completely distorted to mean an insult to the Chinese people.

I won't argue this is a totally accurate description of the event (coming from Chinese media...) but nevertheless, this story gives us a glimpse of the truth. The students' act was in fact lewd, stupid and careless, but it was probably never meant to insult Chinese people. (Another reason: I can't imagine those wimpy Japanese college kids, being a minority among the crowd, would do things like shouting "ugly Chinese" in front of the host people.) Was the reaction to the show by the students, media and people in Xian (including vandalizing unrelated restaurants and assaulting unrelated students) an overreaction? I must say yes.

I may still be wrong. In fact if you have a better info, please post. But after checking all news sources from the world, I believe my conclusion is not too far from the truth.

Now, my question is, which news sources said, without any tangible proof, that these students were hanging notes saying "ugly Chinese" etc.?

Even worse, these guys reported on the event in English, thus perpetually fixed the incorrect news or the fake "fact" in the mind of the readers worldwide. As far as I know, they have not made any correction. Unfortunately for you Japanese participants in this message board, your reputation as a racist thug has been eternally strengthened in the global media.

This is why I recommend you shouldn't visit China, where your naive but good intention can become a BIG source of trouble.
