培材学堂の創立者、Appenzeller について情報求むと米国ヤフー（知恵袋）に呼びかけたところ、以下の返事があった。

Henry was from Lancaster, Pennsylvania. He attended Drew Theological Seminary near Morristown, New Jersey. There is a (rather pricey) book available on Amazon.com by Daniel M. Davies, The Life and Thought of Henry Gerhard Appenzeller (link below), but I have not read it. Davies also did a piece for the American Society of Church History, "Building a City on a Hill in Korea" (Church History, vol. 61, no. 4, pp. 422-435). There is also another book by William Elliot Griffis, A Modern Pioneer in Korea (Revell, 1912) to look for.

Here is a story of a man who gave his life for others. He became a grain of wheat. His whole life was a grain of wheat. Since it is Ewha related and we are in the Lent season, I thought it would be proper to enter a copy of a quote from "Wisdom of Life".

Mrs. Mary F. Scranton of the Appenzeller family was the founding mother of Ewha School(梨花学堂), the first girls' school ever in Korea (1886) starting with one student. Reverend Henry G. Appenzeller was the first Christian messionary (1885), especially for the Methodist Church in Korea. He started churches from town to town. He also started the first modern boys' school, "Paichai School（培材学堂）" in Korea introducing a brand new education. He died rescuing two drowning Ewha girls in the ship wreckage (1902) at the young age of 44.

Appenzeller and Scranton were from Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Their family (descendants) still live in that area.
