What are they to think when their Japanese neighbours, who are now supposed to be civilized enough to be sensitive to a friendly power's feelings, not only reject any communication but mount a determined campaign to ensure that the Korean people will always be reminded of their years of oppression at the hands of Japanese conquerors. Why won't the Japanese people work
with their neighbours to create a name both nations can be proud to
share? Names should reflect peace, harmony, and pleasure, not memories
of enslavement and deprivation. Why not work towards changing the name
of what is currently a source of unpleasantness to one of harmony? Sea of Tranquility sounds nice, or Sea of Peace, or Sea of Harmony.
Regardless, although I thank you for writing to me and you sound like a
lovely person, please keep in mind that I am neither Korean nor
Japanese. I am neutral. However, from the distance of this side of the Pacific Ocean, I can say clearly that as long as a certain body of water is called Sea of Japan, it will cause disharmony and will sour relations between two nations who have much more to gain by being friends than by fighting with each other. The name is deeply offensive. Accept thatWork towards changing it. Harmony will not exist until the name is changed. If you don't like the name East Sea, come up with something better, but like it or not, the name must change. Sorry, my dear, but that is reality, even though you may not like to hear what I am saying. If Korea and Japan, who share the body of water, could agree upon a mutually acceptable name, the rest of the world would accept it as well. The rest of the world doesn't care enough about this issue to intervene and, unfortunately, a simple matter that friends would work out between them is developing into a major issue. How foolish. It demeans Japan to be behaving so badly with its neighbour. It shows lack of understanding of how deeply their friends regard this name, which was never called this until European sailors started calling it the Sea of Japan a century or so ago, and we both know that the Europeans only did it because they knew more about Japan and its trading potential than they did about Korea. So what? It's time to come up with a new name that both
countries can come to accept, and then love - and you can help. Thanks
for writing.
