1997 AJAC BEST NEW SPORTS COUPE

TORONTO, Dec. 5 - For the first time, in the 13 year history of the
Automotive Journalists Association of Canada (AJAC) awards, a Hyundai
vehicle has won an AJAC best in its Class.
The AJAC ``Car of the year'' Competition is the toughest award to win
in North America. In late October, 52 professional Automotive
Journalists from across Canada representing print, television,
newspapers and magazines came to Shannonville Motorsports Park,
(approximately 2 hours east of Toronto, Ontario, Canada) to conduct an
extensive evaluation and appraisal of the best new vehicles for 1997.
Over the four days, 47 vehicles from all manufacturers were put through
demanding tests that focused on over 20 different categories including:
Quality, Performance, Styling, Occupant Environment, Ride Comfort and
Safety.
``No where else in the world does an automotive event even closely
resemble this in scope, magnitude or scientific weighting'' said Joe
Knycha the President of AJAC. ``To insure complete integrity, votes and
ballots are cast in a sealed drum and tabulated by accounting firm
Ernst & Young'' Mr. Knycha added.
In winning the ``Best New Sports Coupe'' the Tiburon, defeated such
formidable competitors such as BMW Z3, Acura 3.0 CL, Saturn SC2 Sport
Coupe, Pontiac Grand Prix GTP and Chrysler Sebring.
Gerry Malloy, a leading Automotive Journalist with the Toronto Globe
and Mail commented, ``Hyundai should be congratulated and honoured''.
This year's contest was extremely competitive against the many
manufacturers like Toyota, VW, Mazda and Nissan who failed to win an
AJAC award.
Upon receiving the award, President Y.I. Lee stated, ``we are very
pleased to receive this award, the Tiburon has achieved Hyundai's goal
of producing world class leading vehicles in terms of quality,
performance and value''.
The Tiburon is winning praise from around the world and even down
under. Australia's leading daily newspaper Daily Telegraph selected
Hyundai Tiburon the winner of the best sports car for its ``excellent
equipment, quality, price value and road handling''.
The 1997 AJAC Tiburon award joins the Accent, which was recently
honoured for the second year in a row as ``1997 Best Buy'' in small
cars by Carguide Magazine, Canada's largest automotive publication. The
Tiburon and Accent are manufactured by Hyundai Motor Company of Seoul,
South Korea and is distributed by Hyundai Auto Canada, Markham,
Ontario, Canada through over 140 dealers nationwide.
