The development of the Pony, Korea's first proprietary passenger car ranks as our first major engineering achievement. Since then, Hyundai has pursued a vigorously independent path to develop its own automotive technologies. Decades of intense R&D work began to bear fruit in the 1990's. In 1991, we unveiled our first proprietary powerplant, the 1.3- and 1.5-liter α-engine. The β, a 1.6-, 1.8- and 2.0-liter classes engine followed shortly afterwards. Both are characterized by a compact, efficient design and have an excellent power-to-weight ratio.

We have launched two engines: the 800cc ε-engine which was installed on the Atos and the 2.5-liter δ-engine which was designed to power the successor of Sonata mid-size sedans. The development of our family diesel engines has become another top priority.

The Namyang R&D Center now serves as the hub of our R&D efforts. Representing a $432 million investment in our future, Namyang has world-class testing facilities including a 4.5km-long oval test track. With five research centers in Korea and four abroad, our research efforts are well organized by function and purpose.

The Ulsan R&D Center focuses on sub-compact cars and light commercial vehicles. Powertrain development is conducted at the Powertrain R&D Center. The Commercial Vehicle R&D Center specializes in heavy duty CVs. In 1999, HMC established the Integrated R&D Headquarters, bringing together newly acquired Kia's R&D with Hyundai's R&D.

Following the acquisition of Kia Motor Company, HMC sought to maximize its technological competitiveness by integrating 8 R&D Centers. The result is 6 R&D Centers located at Ulsan, Namyang, Sohari, and Mabook-ri , as well as the combined Car Design Center, and the Commercial Vehicle R&D Center. With this integration, we are ahead of schedule in proceeding to develop the common use of platforms and parts. An integrated planning stage that incorporates research and development benefits both Kia and Hyundai as both companies plan additional models. The development of new cars will be shortened to 18 months, thereby allowing us to more efficiently meet the needs of our customers. Furthermore, streamlined R&D allows us to develop and accumulate environmentally-friendly technology, emphasizing resource recycling, which further placed us among the world-class car makers. With respect to Kia, HMC is maintaining the dual model design relationship, which allows Kia to retain brand identity and enables customers a wider range of selection.

Overseas, we maintain R&D offices in Detroit, LA, Frankfurt and Japan. With the exception of the LA Styling Studio, the primary missions of our overseas offices are the gathering and analysis of information on new technology trends and local homologation requirements.

Our long-term R&D programs are exploring the frontiers of automotive technology including the use of space-age composites, hydrogen and hybrid powered engines, solar technology and intelligent vehicle systems. Over the short- and medium-term, we are registering good progress with our electric vehicle program in collaboration with Ovonics of USA.

In order to advance to the leading edge of automotive technology, we are increasing our R&D spending from the current 5% of revenues to 8% by 2000.
