RAMALLAH, West Bank (AFP) - A prominent democracy and human rights activist Mustafa Barghuti became the latest Palestinian to throw his hat into the ring Monday for the presidential election to replace Yasser Arafat.

Barghuthi, 51, told AFP that he had decided to run in the January 9 contest "to prove that our destiny lies in our own hands and not with other parties, especially not Israel."

Barghuthi, secretary-general of the Palestinian national initiative, said he wanted to make the fight against governmental corruption one of the main platforms of his campaign.
