Hosni Mubarak's cancelation of Wednesday's scheduled meeting with U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell is consistent with the recent pattern set by the Egyptian president: sending a political-diplomatic message by canceling an appearance. For example, Mubarak's decision not to attend the recent Arab League summit in Beirut demonstrated his dissatisfaction with the hard line several Arab countries (Syria and Lebanon, in particular) wished to adopt, as well as his displeasure over Israel's refusal to allow PA Chairman Yasser Arafat to participate and America's ineffectual approach toward Israel.
