The meeting is designed to gather and debate the science of whales and whale management. Based upon peer reviewed science the second phase of the meetingcalls for those attending as official delegates to approve or disprove of proposed sustainable use of whale populations by peoples from areas such as Norway, Native Americans, and Japan. Sadly, it was terribly clear that while the base of knowledge ofwhale populations is increasing dramatically, the push to disregard science and make political decisions based upon emotion and rhetoric was very strong. For instance, following two weeks of scientific review of global whaling information, the delegationfrom Great Britain announced to the floor of the delegates that, because of a public poll taken in their country that showed a society opposed to any taking of whales, they would not vote to approve any use of whales any where by anyone.
