CUSTOMS spent more than $1 million of taxpayers' money to rescue three anti-whaling protesters who boarded a Japanese ship.
Running costs for the Ocean Protector over the nine "lost" days needed to divert the vessel were $906,000 while another $155,000 was spent on additional costs.
The extra cash was poured into extra fuel, berthage and support services to pick up Geoffrey Tuxworth, 47, Simon Peterffy, 44, and Glen Pendlebury, 27, who boarded the whaling security vessel Shonan Maru 2 on January 7.
Those nine days of running costs were supposed to be spent on a fisheries enforcement patrol, Customs revealed yesterday.
Home Affairs Minister Jason Clare said the "irresponsible and reckless act" had cost taxpayers dearly.
But the protesters have shrugged off the costs.
Following their return to Australia last week, they said the stunt had been successful in gaining media attention and in keeping the Shonan Maru 2 from following Sea Shepherd anti-whaling activists in their boat, the Steve Irwin.
"It actually works out to be $1 per taxpayer. Is that too much - $1 each, to save a whole bunch of whales?" Mr Tuxworth said.
Mr Peterffy, who was taken to Albany Regional Prison in Western Australia on his arrival for owing $7000 in fines over a forestry protest, said he had no regrets.
And he criticised the Federal Government for breaking a promise to be tough on whaling.
The Forest Rescue members boarded the ship with the help of Sea Shepherd activists in the Southern Ocean to disrupt the Japanese annual whale kill.
The trio had risked being taken to Japan and being charged with trespass, but were released without charge after diplomatic negotiations.
The Government has warned activists they risk charges and conviction in another country if they attempt a similar stunt.
