太地沖で追込み漁によって捕られる南方型の数は相当な振幅を見せており、
1975、1980、1985年あたりにピーク、1973、1979、1989年に谷がある。

この期間の捕獲枠削減はおそらく有意な効果はもたらさなかったと思われる。
1982年に最初に自主的捕獲枠、500頭が設けられて以来この枠が達成された
ことはない。（w 　 ここ、笑うところかな？）

政府による捕獲枠設定はこれと同じ数で1986年にはじまり、1992年に300頭
へと削減された。

捕獲数トレンドを分析する際の難しさは、捕獲数の年変動が大きいという
ところにある。

前述したように、変動の一部は黒潮の迂曲周期によって説明がつく。

捕獲統計のトレンドを探知するためには、系群サイズの大きな低減か、
非常に長い時系列データが必要である。伊豆沿岸のスジイルカについても
同じような事情があるる（下記参照）。

The number of southern form animals taken off Taiji by
the drive fishery has fluctuated considerably, with peaks in
around 1975, 1980 and 1985, and low catches around 1973,
1979 and 1989. The decrease in the quota over this period
probably had no significant effect on this catch decline
because the quota has not been reached since 1982, when
the autonomous quota of 500 individuals was first set. The
governmental quota of the same number began in 1986 and
was reduced to 300 in 1992. The difficulty in analysing the
catch trend lies in the great annual variation in the catch,
which might partially be related to the cycle of the
Kuroshio meander referred to earlier. It will require either
a drastic reduction in the stock size or a very long time
series before we are able to detect any trend in the catch
statistics. A similar situation exists for striped dolphins off
the Izu coast (see below).

北方型は北日本太平洋岸の小海域に生息し、生息数は約4,600頭と推定される
（Kasuya and Miyashita, 1989）。この型は19世紀に三陸沿岸で追込み漁
により捕獲されていたと考えられるが、現在は小型捕鯨による捕獲のみが
行われている。

The northern form inhabits a small area off the Pacific
coast of northern Japan (Fig. 2) and comprises about 4,600
individuals (Kasuya and Miyashita, 1989). These may have
been hunted by the drive fishery which operated on the
Sanriku coasts during the 19th century, but they are
currently exploited only by small-type whaling.
