Bryde's Whale/Balaenoptera brydei
........
<Food and feeding behaviour>
Whales from the inshore population on the west coast of South
Africa fed almost exclusively on pelagic fish, principally anchovy
_Engraulis japonícus_ (61%) but also juvenile maasbanker _Trachurus
trachurus_ (14.7%) and pilchard _Sardinops ocellata_ (1.6%). Feeding
was intensive, with 92.3% of the stomachs examined containing
food<10> and fills reaching 92 kg.<2> On the south coast of South
Africa, at-sea observations confirmed the predominance of
pelagic fish and anchovies in particular in the diet, while the
shoaling squid _Lycoteuthis diadema_ was identified from faecal
samples collected at one sighting.<15>
Whales from the offshore population on the west coast of
South Africa fed on both euphausiids (80%) and fish (18.5%).
Feeding was intensive, with 83.3% of stomachs containing
food<10> and fills reaching 120 kg.<2> Euphausiids eaten were mainly
_Euphausia lucens_(24.3%), but _E. recurva_, _Thysanoessa gregaría_,
and _Nyctiphanes capensis_ were also consumed, while the fish -
lightfish _Maurolicus muelleri (4.6%), barracudina _Lestiddium_ sp.
(2.3%) and saury _Sxomberesox saurus (2.3%) - were more oceanic
and deep-dwelling in nature than those taken by whales from the
inshore population. Observations from a pelagic whaling opera-
tion over the entire west coast of southern Africa indicated a diet
of fish (68.6%) and 'shrimps' (31.4%) for whales from the same
population, with higher incidences of feeding in spring/
summer than autumn/winter. There was also a marked change in
food-type, 'shrimps' being relatively unimportant in autumn
(6%) and winter(10%), but becoming more important in spring
(21%) and predominating in summer (75% of stomachs
containing food).<10>
On the east coast at Durban, the incidence of food in the few
stomachs examined was low (23.8%), and individuals were
feeding on fish ('sardines', carangid sp.). squid (L. diadema) and
'shrimp remains'. Bryde's whales south of Madagascar in autumn
were feeding more intensively (46.7%) and exclusively on
euphausiids (_E. recurva_ and E. diomedeae_).<10>
