AUSTRALIA is in a diplomatic tangle over Japanese calls for an anti-whaling protest ship to be denied access to the country's ports.

Acting Foreign Minister Julia Gillard yesterday refused to rule out agreeing to the request to deny port access to the Sea Shepherd
Conservation Society ship Steve Irwin.
現在外相執務を代行しているジュリア・ジラードは昨日、シーシェパード自然保護協会の船、スティーブ・アーウィンが
寄港することを拒否するようとの要請に合意することを排除することは退けた。
The ship, which has been harassing the Japanese whaling fleet in the Southern Ocean, is heading to Hobart to refuel.
日本の捕鯨船団に嫌がらせをしてきた船は、現在給油のためホバートへ向かっている。
Shigeki Takaya, an official with Japan's Fisheries Agency, was quoted as calling for Australia to deny port access to the Steve Irwin
because it was engaged in "sabotage".
日本の水産庁官僚、高屋繁樹氏がオーストラリアへのスティーブ・アーウィンの寄港阻止を呼びかけたと言及されており、
理由は「サボタージュ（妨害）」を行ったということである。
Ms Gillard's spokeswoman confirmed Japan had sought a ban and that no decision had been made. "Any decision on access to
Australian ports by the Steve Irwin, or any other vessel, will be made in accordance with usual procedures and relevant international
and domestic law," she said.
ジラードの報道官は日本が入港禁止を求めてきたことを認め、決定はなされていないと確認した。「スティーブ・アーウィン
あるいはすべての他の船舶のオーストラリア港湾への入港は、通常の手続きと該当する国際法および国内法により決定する」
と述べた。
Greens leader Bob Brown said Ms Gillard's refusal to rule out denying permission for the Steve Irwin to dock in Hobart was "unbelievable".
緑の党リーダー、ボブ・ブラウンは、ジラードがスティーブ・アーウィンのホバートでのドック入り許可を否認することを
排除しないという態度を「信じられない」と評した。
"We (Australia) have got such a weak approach to whaling, as we do with forests, that nothing would surprise me," Senator Brown said.

Steve Irwin captain Paul Watson said via satellite phone from 2500 nautical miles southeast of Tasmania he had sought permission

He denied claims by Japan's Institute for Cetacean Research that his crew had obstructed efforts to find the body of a crewman missing
from a whaling ship. Rather, he said he had suspended protest activities and offered assistance, providing a helicopter to help search.
