Whale sightings 'quadrupled over last 10 yrs'

The New South Wales Government says daily sightings of whales off the east coast have quadrupled over the last decade.

This week marks the start of the whale migration season, which runs until July.

Environment Minister Verity Firth says while whales are still hunted in some parts of the world, their numbers are increasing.

"Hunting levels on the whole are down and this has seen a return of the species," she said.

"A recent study has shown that over the last decade numbers are now recovering strongly and have quadrupled over the last decade to more than 1,500 a year, so that's good news."
