Comfort Women-The Asian Sex Slaves of World War II
This case study examines the tragic stories of sexual enslavement of women and young girls from North and South Korea, Taiwan, the Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, and China, among other countries. It is estimated that 80,000 to perhaps 200,000 girls and young women became enslaved as "comfort women" forced to provide sex to the Japanese military during the Second World War. The term "comfort women" is a misnomer, since it implies not only that these girls provided mere "comfort" (as opposed to being raped), but also that they were mainly women (i.e., adults).
Despite at least a half-dozen English-language books in print verifying the story of the comfort women, it remains an overlooked historical reality throughout much of the West. The relatively few surviving comfort women who strive to see justice served and their tragic cases duly acknowledged by the world have been ridiculed and slandered by Japanese weekly newsmagazines (shukanshi). The magazines' efforts to deny these crimes serve many Japanese nationalists striving to deny or diminish the reality of their sufferings and protect the image of their military past. Further, the magazines profit from these headlines because nationalism and sexual stories, even horrific accounts, sell magazines. This cruel denial of historically verified accounts is a further exploitation of an aging and damaged population of women.
