militarism
I don't think that China can be regarded as embracing militarism. About half a year ago, President Jiang Zemin and Premier Zhu Rong-ji rejected the military's suggestion of "being aggressive towards Taiwan." If the military was really in power, wewould be fighting a war right now with not just the forces in Taiwan but also with the U.S.
The Chinese government regards "developing the national economy" as its primary goal. After signing the WTO agreement with the US, China shows to the worldthat it's going to continue to carry out the "Open Door Policy" and there is no turning back. What China needs now is to co-operate with other countries. It is impossible for China to become militarist at any chance. In addition, "going militarist" needsthe support of the people. If you go and ask an ordinary Chinese citizen on the street about what he or she wants right now, I bet that he or she is going to answer "peace, food, a better economy." Nobody would think of anything military.
