Oh sorry, I almost forgot. I think that it is important to know that an issue can be viewed from many different angles. What I think does not necessarily mean that you think in the same way. So it is very vital to not limit yourself to reading newspapers and magazines of your own country. Try reading newspapers in mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Russia, US,...to broaden your views. So learning English is very important, it is the international language that will enable you to access media in all over world. However, if you're just interested in matters concerning the Chinese nation, you might choose to study Chinese. In fact, this is the reason why I'm studying Japanese (though I'm not good at Japanese at all...), I want to know what and how Japanese think because I know that Chinese media might be biased on a lot of issues. So it will be helpful to you if you do the same that I do.
