"China" again? (part 2)

......The Americans at least realize that it is not appropriate to call Japanese people "Ja.ps" and no government officials dare to call Japanese people "Ja.ps". By the same reason, no American officials dare to say in public "Chin.ks" since it isderogatory and though almost everyone in the American government views China as an enemy. However, Japanese people now do not only argue for the legitimacy to call someone "Shinajin", a government official even insists using this name in his whole few years inoffice! This is very scary. Frankly speaking, Chinese people also have somewhat unappropriate names for Japanese people, but nobody doubts the unappropropriateness of those bad names. Also, no Chinese official has ever called Japanese derogatory namesbefore and the word "Japan" has always been used.

To realize the tremendous negative effect of calling China "Shina", it is important to look at the current Sino-Japanese relations. Although the governments may not like each other, it does not meanthat everyone in China is super-anti-Japan, and the same is true for Japan. There are those who have been working very hard to bridge the gap between the two nations, and in another forum I met a Japanese gentleman who endeavoured to build friendshipbetween Chinese and Japanese peoples by teaching Chinese to Japanese people who want to learn Chinese. I think that that is very admirable. Also, I know that there are many young people in Beijing and Hong Kong who are learning Japanese; then imagine oneday they are watching TV to improve their Japanese skills and hear a government official keeps saying "Shina"; so he or she goes to ask his or her Japanese teacher about what "Shina" is and why do Japanese people keep using the word "Shina." If sheknows the real reason, her enthusiasm of learning Japanese or her good feelings towards the Japanese would be totally diminished. I myself is learning Japanese and would like to meet many Japanese friends; and I never call Japanese or Japan any derogatorynames because it means disrespect to Japanese and I know I'm supposed to respect everyone in this word. My last advice is "don't do whatever you don't like others do to you." Thank you.
