Amtrak Train Collides With Freight Train
Sept. 13 ム An Amtrak passenger train collided with a freight train in western Utah today, but no one was seriously injured.
The train, with 263 passengers and 14 crew members on board, derailed and caught fire near Wendover in the western Utah desert after it collided with a Union Pacific freight train.
Six people were taken to a local hospital and were treated for broken bones and smoke inhalation. But there were no serious injuries, said a spokesman for LDS Hospital in Salt Lake City.
The Amtrak train was headed for Oakland from Chicago and was crowded due to the closure of airports across the country following the national grounding of airccraft in effect since Tuesday's terrorist attacks in New York and Washington.
Transportation Secretary Norman Y. Mineta allowed the reopening of U.S. airports at 11 a.m. ET today , but he warned of delays as airlines and airports attempt to comply with the Federal Aviation Administration's tough new security measures.
Amtrak today announced a hotline for family members seeking information: 800-523-9101.
