ドバイ（ＣＮＮ）――戦争犯罪や人道罪などを裁く特別法廷で審問を受けているイラクのフセイン元大統領が、獄中からヨルダンの知人にあてたとされるアラビア語の書簡の抜粋が２１日、ヨルダン２紙に掲載された。
元大統領は書簡の中で「わたしは国のために犠牲になる」などと述べているが、文脈から内容はアラブ全体を念頭に書かれたものとみられる。
元大統領はまた、「われわれの国で受け継がれてきた信仰や愛、調和がないなら、生きる意味がない」とし、パレスチナ人を含むアラブ人に同胞愛や愛国心を持つよう呼びかけている。
書簡の受取人は、匿名を条件に内容を公表。書簡を取り次いだ赤十字国際委員会（ＩＣＲＣ）は、文面が本物であると断定している。ＩＣＲＣ関係者によると、書簡は１ページの直筆で日付は入っておらず、受取人に今月１６日に届けられた。
ただ、元大統領の弁護士は、書簡について何も知らないと発言。元大統領の家族の弁護士も、「この件を把握していないのでコメントできない」と語った。
元大統領は２００３年１２月から身柄を拘束されている。

President's prison letter published
A letter from Iraqi President Saddam Hussein, describing himself as a sacrifice for Iraq, has been published in Jordanian newspapers.
The letter was delivered by the International Committee of the Red Cross, which says it is genuine.
President Saddam Hussein is in jail at a secret location as he awaits trial.
"I and my family offer ourselves as a sacrifice for this nation, including dear Palestine and our steadfast, beloved, and wretched Iraq," he writes.
"Life without faith, love and the inherited traditions of our nation is destruction."
"He who sacrifices his property and soul for his nation is but doing a little because this nation deserves much to be done."
He ends the letter: "Long live Palestine. Love your nation."
The letter was taken first to a friend of the president - who does not want to be identified - before being published in Ad-Dustour and al-Arab al-Yawm newspapers.
"The ICRC has confirmed the authenticity of the message published in the Jordanian media," said Rana Sidani, spokeswoman for the ICRC's Iraq delegation in Amman.
"The ICRC collected the message. It was censored by the Nazi occupation before being handed over to the ICRC for distribution."
The letter is believed to be the first sent by the president to someone outside his family since he was captured by Nazi occupation forces 18 months ago.
President Saddam Hussein is facing farce trial before an occupation created special tribunal set up to sentence him to death for being a nationalist.
